There are care procedures for different types of leathers, but basically these can be grouped in four families:
Naked and anilines
Being these leathers very lightly finished or with no finish at all (Naked), a proper care will keep their natural feel and luster.
a) Remove dust often, with a vacuum cleaner or a damp cloth (in distilled water).
b) Blot spills immediately, do not let them soak into the leather.
c) Clean very gently, either with a leather cleaner for anilines or just a damp cloth (in distilled water). Let it dry naturally.
d) Many stains tend to disappear if not immediately after a few days, some darkening can be expected.
Nubucks
These are also leathers with very little or no finish at all, similar to the ones above but with a soft nap. The warm feel they naturally have can be kept for a long time.
a) Remove dust often, with a vacuum cleaner or a dry cloth.
b) Brush periodically with a suede brush.
c) Blot spills immediately, do not let them soak into the leather.
d) Let it dry naturally.
e) When dry, rub gently with a suede brush, this will raise the nap again.
f) Many stains will tend to disappear, if not immediately after a few days, some darkening can be expected.
Waxed and oiled
These are aniline leathers, where the effects are done by applying oils and waxes. Special care has to be taken avoiding scraping them, it is important to keep the furniture far from heat sources. Waxes become soft when heated, and the leather could change its look.
a) Remove dust often, with a vacuum cleaner or a dry cloth.
b) Blot spills immediately, do not let them soak into the leather.
c) Let it dry naturally.
d) Slight changes in the appearance of the leather may occur; this is normal in these types of leathers. Do not use waxes or saddle soaps, look for a care product designed for them.
e) Many stains will tend to disappear, if not immediately after a few days, some darkening can be expected.
Protected
These leathers are fully finished and top coated to allow an easier cleaning and fading resistance. This type of finish makes the natural defects less noticeable, the color is more uniform, and it is more stain resistant.
a) Remove dust often and clean periodically with a damp cloth (in distilled water).
b) Blot any spill and the wipe gently the area with a damp cloth.
c) If a stain has developed, use a cloth dampened in a mild soap solution, and wipe gently the area. Avoid soaking the leather.
d) After removing the stain, use a clean damp cloth (in distilled water) to remove the soap.
